Dead Sea Scrolls - Jerusalem

In Jerusalem at the Israel Museum you can find the beautiful hall of the Dead Sea Scrolls! These 2000 years old scroll mostly in fragments were found between 1947 and 1956. The first scrolls were found by a beduin and then over 950 scrolls have been found around the caves in Qumran near the Dead Sea. These fragments have been but together to about 850 scrolls and many of them are exposed here. Most of them are written in Hebrew but also in Aramic and Greek. They fall into 3 different categories: biblical, apocryphal and sectarian. Thanks to these scrolls, our knowledge of Jewish society during the Hellenistic and Roman times has greatly increased.
Before you visit the Israel Museum you should check the opening hours as they follow the Jewish calendar and opening times changes a lot.
